Inflatable Fender Installation Instructions

1. Choose the Right Size and Type

  • Size Selection: Ensure the inflatable fender is appropriately sized for the vessel or dock. The fender should be large enough to absorb impact but not so large that it obstructs normal operations.
  • Type Selection: Depending on the type of fender (e.g., cylindrical, spherical, or cone-shaped), make sure it is suited to the particular docking or mooring scenario.

2. Determine the Position

  • Positioning on the Vessel:
    • Place the fender in areas where the boat or ship is most likely to make contact with the dock or another vessel. Common locations include along the sides of the ship, especially at the bow, stern, and amidships.
    • For larger vessels, multiple fenders may be used to ensure coverage of the entire length of the ship’s hull.
  • Positioning on the Dock:
    • Ensure that the fender is placed in areas where the dock may come into contact with the vessel, often along the quay or pilings.
    • The fender should be mounted at the correct height to protect the hull from contact, ensuring that it is neither too high nor too low.

3. Attaching the Fender

  • For Vessel Use:
    • Rope Attachment: Attach the fender to the vessel using strong, weather-resistant ropes or lines. The rope should be tied securely to the fender’s attachment points (usually located on both sides of the fender).
    • Adjustable Length: Ensure the ropes are long enough to allow the fender to hang freely at the correct height but not too loose, as this could cause the fender to shift out of place. Use adjustable knots or tensioners if necessary.
    • Fender Placement: The fender should be positioned in a way that allows it to float against the dock or vessel, cushioning any impact. It should be suspended or positioned at the appropriate height where it can effectively absorb the impact without causing damage to either the fender or the structure.
  • For Dock Use:
    • Mounting Brackets: Many inflatable fenders for dock use come with mounting brackets or hangers that can be fixed to the dock structure. Ensure the bracket is securely fastened, and the fender is easily replaceable when needed.
    • Rope or Chain Support: For some installations, ropes or chains are used to suspend the fender at the correct height from the dock. Ensure that the fender is positioned so that it can absorb the full impact without moving too much during use.

4. Check Fender Orientation

  • Vertical Position: Ensure the fender is hung or placed in a vertical position for cylindrical fenders or horizontal for spherical fenders. The orientation will depend on the fender shape and the area being protected.
  • Even Distribution: If you are using multiple fenders, make sure they are spaced evenly along the side of the vessel or dock to evenly distribute the pressure from impact.

5. Inflation Check

  • Before final installation, make sure the fender is inflated to the correct pressure. Over-inflation or under-inflation can reduce the fender’s effectiveness and may cause damage.
  • Air Valve: Check that the air valve is properly closed after inflation to prevent air leakage.

6. Safety Checks

  • Secure Connections: Double-check all ropes, chains, or brackets to ensure they are securely fastened and will not come loose during use.
  • Impact Test: Gently push or bump the fender to check that it absorbs impact properly. It should compress slightly and then return to its original shape.

7. Regular Maintenance

  • After installation, periodically check the condition of the fender, especially if it has been exposed to harsh weather conditions. Inspect for any leaks, abrasions, or signs of wear. If any issues are found, make repairs or replacements as necessary.
